This past week, Carleton Memorial United Church members Mark, Joanne, and Jack Wilson travelled to Wageningen, The Netherlands, to take part in the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day — a national celebration marking the end of the Nazi occupation during the Second World War.

The occasion was especially meaningful for the Wilson family, as Mark and Joanne’s son, Sean, took part in the parade that concluded the formal ceremonies — not just marching, but playing the drums as part of the Seaforth Highlanders Regiment.

The commemorative events drew thousands of people, including hundreds of Canadians. Canada had the largest international presence in the parade, with over a dozen different military units participating. Distinguished guests included Governor General Mary Simon and the Dutch Prime Minister, underscoring the enduring friendship between Canada and The Netherlands.

While in Wageningen, the Wilsons also laid a CMUC wreath at a nearby Catholic church, a quiet and heartfelt tribute from our congregation to all who served and sacrificed.

We celebrate and give thanks for these moments of remembrance that connect our church family to global acts of peace and reconciliation.
